This is brilliant and so aligned with a lot of conversations I have been having lately. People want everything to be instant and quick. And as you mentioned developing taste takes real time and trial and error. I'm not sure if most will be willing to do what it takes to curate an authentic taste but it's absolutely the journey that I'm on. I hope more will join!! Thank you for this!
stumbled upon this fantastic piece of writing! you’ve really said it all. i love how you quoted tamsin after that whole kerfuffle! have subscribed, can’t wait to see what else you have to say!
Thank you, it’s a good article. I was circling around it too. Algorithm is training people how to be empty, so does consumption as a value metric - there’s no social responsibility.
Agree. Taste is having your own unique and informed opinion separate from what anyone else thinks. Can’t stand all the CBK-inspired looks haha, that only tells me you’re a follower and tells me nothing about taste.
What an amazing piece! I've been thinking about this, but I couldn't phrase it any better. Thank you for sharing your insights and your research 💌 Subscribing for more!
I love letters like this about personal style and taste, it's something I value so much nowadays because of how insane tiktok culture has gotten with trends and algorithms being pushed to us. I absolutely loved what you wrote about taste being formed through experience. It's important we understand that when making our own style choices.
This read appeared on my home feed and I am glad I read it. Taste is something that I’ve been told I’m good at all muy life, but it wasn’t until everybody started talking about it that I actually got interested in it, where it came from and it has been such an interesting journey to understand where my taste comes from. But truthfully I had to take distance from social media, because as you said it has become an algorithm and to be truthful to my taste I went away of social media to be able to sit just with my thoughts and what truly interested me.
You're welcome! To be honest I am really into fashion concepts/history in general. I'm in the process of writing a piece on the skill/mindset in being your own stylist as I've been so fascinated with fashion and how textiles, shapes and trends influence our "taste" as you've discussed
Brilliant read! I feel like the standard is rising for those sharing their view on style and taste, and this is an excellent sign. Gone is the influencer who is selling what looks great now. Rather, the tastemaker explaining how they created style that will look great in years from now.
Just stumbled on this and it’s brilliant, love the nuance and the concept of the taste trap. Just subbed, excited to read more 💌
So kind!! Thank you 🫶🏻

You put this so perfectly! Heavy on having curiosity.

Well articulated! It makes me wonder how people decide what is good taste and what isn't? Would love to hear your thoughts.

So well said!!
Awesome post. Really happy to be reflecting on my personal taste and what makes me feel most like me
Great breakdown. Completely agree, it’s an echo chamber!
